North Lincolnshire Rich in Heritage
The past and present are never far apart in North Lincolnshire. Our rich and varied heritage is reflected in the landscape we see today, which has been shaped by human activity over thousands of years stretching back to Roman times and beyond. For the visitor there is a wide range of beautiful and often unique sites and monuments scattered throughout its rolling countryside.
The South Humber Collection showcases the area’s leading heritage sites, bringing the past to life.
Within the ornate gatehouse of Thornton Abbey, you can uncover the dramatic stories from a violent time in our history; the boom time of the wool trade, wealthy monks and peasant rebellion. Follow the chilling labyrinth of passageways up into the castle keep like gatehouse, a towering reminder of power and subjugation.
At St Peter’s Church, you can become a history detective and investigate 1000 years of Barton’s human history. Discover the forgotten objects that lay with the dead for centuries – clues to past cultures and beliefs - and see real skeletons, one nearly 1,000 years old, still in its original coffin.
There are hidden delights to discover too like Julian's Bower at Alkborough, one of a handful of surviving medieval turf mazes. The views from here across the confluence of the Trent and Ouse are spectacular.
But heritage isn't just about what we can see in the landscape. There's a rich cultural heritage of local customs and traditions that you can hear, touch and taste!
Our unique association with the leading educational pioneer, Samuel Wilderspin, lets you go back to school and relive the “best days of your life”. The Victorian schoolroom restoration in the heart of Barton’s conservation area includes the UK’s only fully restored Wilderspin playground.
Return to the elegance of a more leisurely era at Normanby’s beautiful Regency Hall and learn about Lincolnshire’s rich rural heritage in the fascinating Farming Museum. Steps back in time in the award winning Victorian walled garden and see how fruit and vegetables would have been grown for the ‘big house’.
