Wilderspin National School situated in the heart of Barton's conservation area, is one of the most important schools surviving in England. Built in 1844, this Grade II* Listed Building is unique because of its association with the educational pioneer, Samuel Wilderspin, the self-styled founder of the Infant School System. Closed in 1978 the newly restored building reopened in January 2009.

The Museum presents a vivid and exciting picture of school life and teaching from 1844 to the present day. The school has many exhibits including a re-creation of Wilderspin's schoolroom and 1845 infant playground, interactive displays showing the changes in the school over the last 150 years and a contrasting late Victorian classroom which is used for re-enactment sessions as part of an education and events programme.

While you are here visit the coffee shop or browse around our museum shop which provide an excellent range of educational and fun gift items related to the themes of the school.
